For village and community halls

Martyn's Law for village halls, sorted by the committee in one evening.

Dances, fairs, quiz nights and private hires can bring 200 or more people through the door. Smallprint gives your committee the procedures, the hirer briefings and the records, at a price you can approve in one meeting.

From £1.33 a week. Free until 1 March 2027. 25% off for charities, CICs and parish councils.

Why it can feel hard for village and community halls

  • The hall is run by a committee of volunteers, and different people open up on different nights.
  • Most events are run by hirers, who need to know the exits and what to do.
  • Budgets are tight, and nobody wants to pay a consultant for something this size.

Does Martyn's Law apply to you?

A few plain questions. You get a clear answer, the reasons, with the guidance paragraph for each, and what to do next.

A. What are you checking?

An indication based on the Home Office statutory guidance, not legal advice. Nothing you enter leaves your device unless you ask us to email it.

Questions we hear from village and community halls

Our hall is hired out. Who is responsible?

Usually the people who control the hall, often the trustees or committee, with hirers responsible for their own event. The checker helps you work out the responsible person, and the events page explains the handover.

Is there a discount for charities and parish councils?

Yes, 25% off any plan for registered charities, CICs and parish councils.

What if our hall holds fewer than 200?

Then the Act's duties probably do not apply. Many halls still choose to prepare because hirers and insurers ask. The checker will tell you.
