Why it can feel hard for churches and places of worship

  • Most of the team are volunteers who give a few hours a week, so everything has to be quick and clear.
  • Big occasions like Christmas, Easter, Eid, weddings and funerals bring far more people than a usual week.
  • Halls and rooms are often hired out, so you need to brief hirers too.

Does Martyn's Law apply to you?

A few plain questions. You get a clear answer, the reasons, with the guidance paragraph for each, and what to do next.

A. What are you checking?

An indication based on the Home Office statutory guidance, not legal advice. Nothing you enter leaves your device unless you ask us to email it.

Questions we hear from churches and places of worship

Do places of worship go into the enhanced tier above 800?

No. Under the Act, places of worship stay in the standard tier even if more than 800 people can attend. The checker takes this into account.

We are a charity. Is there a discount?

Yes. Registered charities, CICs and parish councils get 25% off any plan.

Who should set it up?

Usually whoever looks after the building, such as a churchwarden, building manager or trustee. Anyone can start, and you can add others later.
